FANTOM FRIDAY: CARMILLA – SIGNED AUDIO BOOK
Halloween weekend is here, so what better time to settle down with gothic horror, mystery, vampires and something unsettling?
This week’s Fantom Friday brings you our CD audio book edition of ‘Carmilla’ the classic vampire tale narrated by Tracey Childs. We’ve got just 8 copies available at £9.99 plus postage, each signed by Tracey herself, known for her roles in ‘Howard’s Way’ and ‘Born and Bred’ as well as a number of other classic TV shows.
Originally published in 1872, Carmilla is one of the great gothic vampire tales and a fascinating precursor to the stories that would follow.
Laura lives with her father in a remote castle deep in the forests of Styria. It’s a quiet, solitary existence, with little company beyond her governess and the occasional visit from neighbouring gentry.
Then Carmilla arrives…
There is something captivating about Laura’s mysterious new house guest. Laura finds herself both attracted to and repulsed by Carmilla, yet seems powerless to resist her growing influence.
Meanwhile, a series of sudden wasting deaths begins to affect the local peasants, and before long Laura herself falls dangerously ill.
Can the mystery be uncovered before it’s too late, or will Laura become the latest victim of the vampire Carmilla?
Published 26 years before Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’, it helped shape many of the ideas we now associate with vampire fiction. Carmilla is mysterious, seductive and unsettling, with her relationship with Laura adding a darker sense of obsession and forbidden attraction. The remote castle, strange illnesses, unexplained deaths and creeping sense that something is terribly wrong have all become familiar ingredients of the vampire story. It’s remarkable that a tale written more than 150 years ago can still feel so atmospheric and relevant today.
And with Halloween upon us, this is perhaps the perfect weekend to settle down, turn off the lights and let Carmilla into your home.
Just don’t blame us if you hear something moving outside the window…
Once these eight have vanished into the night, this particular Halloween treat will be gone.
