Remembering Madame Tussaud – the woman behind the waxworks

Marie Tussaud was born on this day in 1761. She was truly a remarkable woman with an incredible story.

She escaped the guillotine and survived the horrors of the French revolution. She toured the towns of Britain for thirty-three hard years with her travelling wax cabinet, fighting off competition against a background of fire, riot, shipwreck and betrayal. She personified persistence, fortitude, dedication and self-belief.

Why does everyone know of her exhibition, but no one knows her story?

You can experience the true story of Madame Tussaud, the woman behind her celebrated waxworks, in ‘Waxing Lyrical: The Story of Madame Tussaud’ written and performed by Judith Paris available now from Fantom Publishing.
