Join us for a truly special evening at Southwark Cathedral as we mark the centenary of one of Britain’s most beloved entertainers, Kenneth Williams. This in-person event, “Faith, Fun and Fiction,” promises laughter, insight, and a heartfelt tribute to a unique cultural icon.

What to Expect

To celebrate 100 years since the birth of Kenneth Williams, acclaimed author Bill Holland—writer of Beyond Our Kenneth: The Continued Diaries—will be joined by the Very Rev’d Dr. Mark Oakley, Dean of Southwark, and renowned writer, performer, and former MP, Gyles Brandreth. Together, they’ll explore Williams’ beliefs, friendships, and legendary anecdotes, as well as imagine a fictional future for the king of comedy.

About the Speakers

  • Bill Holland: Actor-turned-author, Bill Holland brings a wealth of experience and a deep admiration for Kenneth Williams to his work. His book, Beyond Our Kenneth, imagines Williams’ diaries continuing into the 1990s, blending authenticity with affection for the star’s unmistakable voice.
  • Gyles Brandreth: A familiar face on British television and radio, Gyles Brandreth is celebrated for his wit, wordplay, and love of language. He’s a regular on Radio 4’s Just a Minute, a columnist, and the founder of the National Scrabble Championships.
  • The Very Rev’d Dr. Mark Oakley: Dean of Southwark and an award-winning author, Dr. Oakley is known for his work in poetry, theology, and education. His passion for theatre and literature makes him the perfect host for this evening of reflection and celebration.
